About My Challenge
I’ve decided to take part in The Push-Up Challenge this year, not just for the physical challenge, but because mental health awareness is something that has become deeply personal to me.
Like many people working away from home in demanding industries, life doesn’t stop just because you’re on site. Behind the hard hats, high-vis shirts, and daily routines, many of us are carrying pressures that nobody else sees. Family struggles, separation from loved ones, stress, loneliness, conflict, financial pressure, and the emotional toll that comes from trying to keep moving forward while everything around you feels uncertain.
Over the past few years, I’ve experienced some of the hardest personal challenges of my life. There have been times where the mental load felt overwhelming, and I know firsthand how easy it is for people, especially men, to stay silent and convince themselves they just need to “push through it.”
But mental health doesn’t work that way.
What has helped me most during difficult periods has been connection. Honest conversations. Good people checking in. Teammates looking out for one another. Sometimes just knowing someone is willing to listen can make a bigger difference than they realise.
That’s one of the reasons I wanted to register a team for this challenge. Not because I think a few push-ups will solve mental health struggles, but because it starts conversations. It creates awareness. It reminds people that strength isn’t pretending everything is okay. Strength is speaking up, supporting each other, and recognising when someone around you might be struggling.
Working in construction and FIFO environments, we often pride ourselves on resilience and toughness, but I believe real resilience also means looking after your mates and yourself mentally, not just physically.
If this challenge encourages even one person to check in on a friend, ask for help, or realise they’re not alone, then it’s worth doing.
I’m proud to be part of a team supporting mental health awareness and raising funds for services that genuinely help Australians doing it tough.
Look after your mates. Check in. Speak up. You never truly know what someone else is carrying.
