I can't do this.
In April 2023, I lost one of my closest mates from high school, Aaron “Az” Monks, to suicide.
Az was massively into fitness. This June, I’m doing 3,307 push-ups in 23 days. One for every life lost to suicide in Australia in 2024.
My team this year is called “Go for the Juggler” a nod to him teaching me how to juggle, and his love for circus arts.
Last time I did the half-challenge. I’m not very fit. At the time it was 1,572 push ups. I made it, but it was rough.
I already know I’m going to hit that point where I want to stop. To just give up.
But I am determined that I am doing it anyway.
Because that “I can’t do this anymore” feeling is kind of the point.
A lot of people who die by suicide reach that same place, where it all feels like too much and giving up feels like the only thing you can do.
I know I’ll hit that point where I want to give up with this challenge. I’m trying to see what happens if I don’t.
If you can donate — even $1 helps — it all goes to the Push For Better Foundation.
If you see me around, ask if I’ve done my push-ups for the day.
… And then feel free to talk to me about how you are doing. How you are really doing.
For Az.
