About Our Challenge
This cause is especially important to Abbey, who works as a therapist and sees firsthand the impact mental health challenges can have not only on an individual, but also on their family, friends, and wider support network.
Mental health impacts so many of us. Whether personally, through someone we love, or someone we know of, most people have been touched by mental health challenges in some way. That’s why raising awareness, reducing stigma, and improving access to support is so important.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, mental health concerns among young Australians are continuing to rise. Based on the National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing, the prevalence of mental disorders among young people aged 16–24 increased from 26% in 2007 to almost 39% in 2020–2022, the highest of any age group (ABS, 2008; ABS, 2023). Between 2007 and 2020–2022, the proportion of females aged 16–24 experiencing a mental disorder increased more sharply than for males of the same age, with females also more likely to report high levels of psychological distress (AIHW, 2025). Anxiety disorders remain the most common mental health condition among young people, followed by affective and substance use disorders (ABS, 2023; AIHW, 2025).

Lifeline Hunter is one of the beneficiaries of this year’s The Push-Up Challenge. Together, Lifeline and The Push-Up Challenge, aim to raise awareness about mental health and the impact of suicide on Australians.
Funds raised will enable Lifeline Hunter to continue providing their critical 24/7 crisis support and suicide prevention services, answer more help seeker contacts, and ensure any person in Australia who needs support knows where and how to find it.
